National Heirloom Expo 2012

Thanks to recommendations from a couple of friends – thank you Bill and Jocelyn! – I’m assisting with prepping their site for this year’s event. Mostly finished with updating all the Speaker Bios, and I’ve added some Sponsor info as well.

Regarding the Speakers, I’m awed by the range and depth of experience represented by not only the Keynote Speakers (whose bios I haven’t yet touched), but also by the many Presentation Speakers. It’s been fun and exciting to have been given a relatively free hand with editing this already impressive material.

  1. The 2012 Heirloom Expo website turned out to be useful for a lot of attendees, vendors, speakers, etc. I’m glad! I enjoyed meeting and working with the staff at Petaluma Seed Bank and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, to add and maintain lots of web content related to events, speakers, chef/homestead demos, vendors, Kids’ Day, and other topics.

I also got involved in a couple of other Expo projects. One was providing wireless internet access for up to 200 vendors in Grace Pavilion. Another was getting internet services set up in the Hall of Flowers Annex building, and working with my friend Bill on his project to deliver a remote talk on “The World’s Rarest and Hottest Chili Peppers” into the Annex building, while streaming the same live program onto the internet.

The Grace Pavilion project went very well! The signal was excellent throughout the inside of the Hall, and the bandwidth was more than sufficient. Feedback I got from talking with the vendors indicated that everyone who tried to connect was able to access and use the service.

The “Pepper” project was a success in that (1) the basic objectives were met: presenting the talk on the screen in the Annex building while streaming to a public internet site, and (2) we learned some things and identified some ways to improve the presentation next time. The modest attendance in the room and online were probably appropriate for the “beta” version of the presentation!
