Implement a small set of contemporary channel-coding schemes, to include convolutional coding and turbo coding. The platform will be one or more embedded processors, in concert with a practical wireless communication network. I will compare their performance and cost characteristics from a system design perspective. I will demonstrate understanding of current theory and practice of channel coding for error control in data communications.
As of March 2008 I'm engaged in preliminary studies, including basic concepts and methods of digital signal processing and a literature survey. I have completed a Matlab prototype implementation of a convolutional decoder. I'm preparing to port this code to a Texas Instruments TMDSDSK-5510 DSP kit. The core module is a trellis-driven implementation of the Viterbi algorithm employing a general purpose interface that will enable its reuse in other applications, such as receiver equalization.
